LG Sunrise Review with Full Specs and Features for this Android Smartphone

This review by TracfoneReviewer covers the LG Sunrise and will detail the major features for this phone, as well as our comparison to other options available. We hope this information will be helpful, and will continue to update as needed.

Tracfone lg l15g
Tracfone LG Sunrise Review
The LG Sunrise is an Android smartphone that uses GSM networks through Tracfone. It is one of a growing variety of smartphones available from Tracfone, but one of only a few that use GSM networks.

Tracfone is a low cost prepaid cell phone service provider that contracts with major cell phone companies like Verizon and AT&T to use their cell networks to provide service. Tracfone also offers cell phones to use on their networks, and the LG Sunrise is one of these devices.

The Sunrise is fairly similar to several other phones which have also been released by Tracfone over the last few months. The LG Sunset (L33L) shares a similar name, but features a larger screen and better specs.

The LG Lucky (L16C) is almost identical except that the Lucky uses CDMA (Verizon) networks.

While the Sunrise isn't a top of the line device, it does offer some great features in a small size.

Let's look at a few quick pro's and con's for the Sunrise:

LG Sunrise L15G Quick Points:

The Good:
-Uses GSM Network
-Android Device using version 4.4

The Not So Good:
-Specifications (Camera, Memory, 3G). are not as good as other phones available
-Smaller Screen Size

This phone packs some good features into a small size, but if you want the latest and greatest phone, this isn't it. This is a budget friendly small sized smartphone for low to moderate users. It is an improvement over phones like the ZTE Valet or LG Optimus Dynamic, but can't keep up with the LG Power or Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop.

Time to get into the full list of features and specs for the LG Sunrise to really see what this phone is all about.

LG Sunrise Features and Specs List

These are the current features available on the LG L15G Sunrise smartphone:
  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat
  • 3G Connectivity on AT&T Towers
  • WiFi
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • Triple Minutes for Life Split into Text/Talk/Data
  • Hands Free Speaker
  • Hearing Aid Compatible
  • Access to Over a Million Applications through Google Play
  • Up to 32 GB SD Card Compatible, comes with 4 GB SD Card
LG L15G Sunrise Specs
  • Size: 4.43" x 2.50" x 0.49"
  • 3.8" Touchscreen
  • 1.2 Ghz Dual Core Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (not 1 GB Like we expected)
  • Internal Memory 4 GB
  • Weight: 4.2 ounces
  • Battery: 7 Hours Talk Time, 10 Days Standby
Probably the best feature on this phone is that it uses Android 4.4, which I actually prefer even over Android 5.0 (we won't get into that here though...). The Sunrise also has many other good specs that are better than most phones from Tracfone, but not the best.

Now we're going to take a closer review of the LG Sunrise and cover what we like and don't like about this smartphone device.

Note - We are getting reports that the LG Sunrise may also have 4G connectivity along with 3G. Let us know in the comments with your experience!

LG Sunrise Review - Likes and Dislikes

What We Like:
The Sunrise comes with Android 4.4 which is not the latest version of the operating system, but a very popular version that is compatible with almost all oft he apps available from Google Play. With Android you have access to millions of different apps that can do almost anything you can think of. You can get some ideas on our List of the Best Android Apps for Tracfone Users.

The LG L15G is special because it is one of the first smartphones from Tracfone that users GSM networks. The 'G' at the end of its name signifies that it runs on GSM networks, which in this case is AT&T. We are very excited about this because it allows many more consumers to have access to smartphones on Tracfone. Previously, only people in areas with good Verizon coverage could get smartphones with Tracfone. But now, areas with AT&T coverage will also work.

You can take a look at our GSM vs CDMA for more details on the difference between these networks, and to help you choose which is right for you.

Internal Memory on the LG Sunrise from Tracfone
While the Sunrise doesn't have spectacular specs, they are adequate. 512 MB RAM with a Dual Core Processor is just barely enough to keep up with most apps. We initially were not sure about the internal memory, but have since been able to confirm it; the phones has 4 GB of internal memory, along with a 4 GB external SD card which is convenient.

What We Don't Like:
There are a couple of things we don't like about the LG Sunrise, starting with the small screen. At 3.8" it just isn't all that impressive in a market where most phones are closer to 5". However, some users actually prefer the small screen size, so just be aware of this feature as you consider the phone.

Battery Life for the L15G is mediocre and may not last a full day with consistent use. If you need a device with good battery life, the Moto E would be a much better option.

The main thing we don't like about this phone is that it just doesn't really impress. It has a lot of average features and specs that will perform fine for most people, but may disappoint anyone who has used a higher-end smartphone.

How the LG Sunrise Compares to Other Tracfone Smartphones

The Sunrise is similar to several other devices available from Tracfone, most notably the LG Lucky, but also the Samsung Galaxy Stardust and LG Optimus Fuel. All of these phones have smaller sized screens (3.8" to 4") and similar specs with various differences. Obviously the most important difference is that the Sunrise uses GSM networks will the others all run on CDMA.

Several phones are more impressive than the Sunrise, including the LG Power, LG Sunset and LG Ultimate 2. Each of these phones have ea larger screen, similar or more internal memory, and similar or better processors.

We would recommend the LG Sunrise over a few older devices, like the LG Optimus Dynamic, Hquwai Glory and ZTE Valet. The Sunrise outperforms each of these phones in almost every way.

As you can probably see, the LG Sunrise is a mid-level smartphone that offers a variety of great features in a small size. It will likely be suitable for people who want some access to apps, but don't plan to use it for too many things. For the majority of people, we would recommend looking into some of the newer smartphones that come with larger screens like the LG Sunset mentioned above. These phones will have faster performance and should last longer.

Where to Buy the LG Sunrise and Covers/Cases

The LG Sunrise was available for short time on the Tracfone website, and may have gone out of stock. We have also found it on the Walmart website (and some have found it for as little as $10 at Walmart). It may also be available on Amazon and eBay, but we haven't seen it listed yet.

You can probably shop for it wherever Tracfone devices are sold, and you may find it at one of these locations.

Covers and Cases for the Sunrise are plentiful because there are several models from LG that are the same size. Search Amazon for LG Sunrise Cases and you will see many options.

All About Tracfone Data Cards

Welcome to the TracfoneReviewer blog! This post will share specifics on how data works on smartphones with Tracfone. Be sure to also take a look at some of our other posts while you're here.

how does data work on tracfone
Data Cards for Tracfone
Tracfone is a prepaid cell phone service provider that offers both phones and airtime cards. On their newer smartphone devices, you also get data when adding an airtime card which you can use to surf the web when not connected to free WiFi.

Data is very useful on smartphones, but how does the data work on Tracfone smartphones, how can you get more, and what can you do with the data you have?

We are going to cover these questions and more in this post sharing all the details about how Tracfone Data works on smartphones.

Some of the popular smartphones that Tracfone offers include the LG Power, the LG Ultimate 2, and the recently released LG Sunset which uses 4G LTE service on GSM networks.

Or you might be interested in the Tracfone BYOP program, which allows users to bring their own smartphone. Follow the link to learn more, and see a list of the possibilities.

Both the smartphones offered by Tracfone, and the BYOP devices, use data in the same way. So let's get started looking at how data works on these phones.

What is Data on Tracfone Smartphones?

Data is the term generally used to describe the amount (usually in megabytes) you can download or upload on your smartphone via the cell phone network. So data is basically information you download or upload from the internet. This can include many different activities, like checking email, posting photos on Facebook, reading webpages, or watching videos.

Data is used based on the amount of megabytes you download or upload. So if you download a 20 MB image, that will use 20 MB of your data. If you visit a webpage that takes 1 MB to load, you will use 1 MB of data. (further down we will share more on estimating how much different online activities will use up your data.)

On older, non-smartphone devices, data was used at a rate determined by the amount of time you were on a website, but this is not the case for smartphones which is a nice improvement.

As you can see, data works similarly to your calling minutes, in that you are charged based on how much you use. But calling minutes are based on time, rather than megabytes. (EX: if you make a 20 minute call, you will be deducted (about) 20 minutes of talk time.)

How Can you Get More Data for your Tracfone Device?

There are two ways to get more data for your smartphone:

Airtime Cards - You get an equal number of Texts, Data and Talking minutes in various amounts from 60 to 450.
Data Cards - You get only Data, in various amounts from 300 MB to 4 GB (4000 MB)

For most situations you will probably want to add an Airtime card to your phone to increase all your 'buckets' of talk/text/data.

But sometimes you may only want to add data, in which case the data only cards are useful. Let's take a closer look at Data cards to better understand how to use them.

What Are Data Only Cards?

As mentioned above, Data cards increase the amount of data for your smartphone, without adding any additional texts or talking minutes.

This is similar to the Text only cards we recently discussed.

There are some important things to be aware of the make the Data cards unique.

First, they can only be used with smartphones, including the Android devices offered by Tracfone, and all phones offered through the BYOP program.

Second, in our testing, Airtime cards will triple for all smartphone devices, while the Data cards do not, so be aware of that when choosing one or the other. This doesn't necessarily make the regular Airtime cards a better deal, but we will compare the costs for each card next.

Data Card Amounts and the Cost Per MB Compared to Airtime Cards

Tracfone Data cards come in several different amounts, and are at this time, as follows:

300 MB for $10
750 MB for $15
2000 MB for $30
4000 MB for $50

You have several options to choose from, but which one is the best value, and how do they compare to the regular Airtime cards? Take a look at this chart:

Cost per MB for Tracfone Data cards and Airtime cards:
Tracfone Data Card Amounts
Cost per MB for Data and Airtime Cards
Straight away we can see that the Data cards cost between 1 cent and 3 cents per MB, with the largest card, the 4 GB (4000 MB), the best value.

If we look at the regular airtime cards and run the same calculation we see they are not nearly as good a deal for data. However, we are totally not incorporating the additional Text/Talk time you get with the regular Airtime cards from Tracfone. We are only looking at which card is a better deal for purchasing Data. It is interesting to note that the 450 Minute Card is the best value for the Airtime Cards.

We can conclude then, that if you are only in need of extra data, the 4 GB Data card is the best value.

Where to Buy Tracfone Data Cards

Tracfone Data cards are available form a variety of sources, as is the case for Tracfone Airtime cards. You can find Data cards on the Tracfone website under Airtime.

You can also find the Tracfone Data cards in many retail stores, and even online through other retailers. We have found Data cards on eBay in various amounts.

Now let's cover one more question that we see asked quite often.

How Much Can you Do Online with 300 MB of Data?

A common question we see is, what can you do online with a certain amount of data? This is a very good question, because many people tend to estimate how many airtime minutes they will need, and then buy the airtime card that suits their needs best. But if you're unfamiliar with how much data is used by smartphones, it makes it hard to estimate.

It is a little hard to give a straight answer to this question, it all depends on what you do online  Take a look at this image (provided by Tracfone) to help give you a better idea:

tracfone 300mb of data what you can do
Estimated usage for 300 MB of data with Tracfone
From this table we see you can visit about 245 webpages with 300 MB of data, or send/receive about 4000 emails. Hopefully this information will help you gain a better understanding of how data is used with Tracfone, and where your data is going.

If you notice, doing certain things online, like streaming music, or even more so, streaming video, will use your data quickly, while visiting webpages or sending emails, especially those with few images, will use less of your data.

Another good resource for estimating your data usage is the Data Calculator on Verizon's website. Enter your estimated activities, and it will tell you about how much data you will use in a month.

Remember, that if you want to stop using data, you can usually go into the settings on your device, select data, and turn it off. Using WiFi networks, like at your home or work, does not deduct from your data.

Here is a helpful article on what online activities use data, and some other basic details about data usage from an AT&T Forum.

All About Tracfone Data Cards

Each of the phones below offers certain features and benefits the others may not be able to offer, so it is important to analyze which phone may be right for you. Some of the phones are older devices but there are some new Android smartphones included in the list as well.

These are a wide variety of LG brand phones available with Tracfone, for those who like the LG brand and want to narrow their search to one brand. If you prefer other brands of cell phone, you may find our useful.
Cell Phone Reviews page

LG is a very popular electronics company that makes everything from TV's to refrigerators. They make some of the most cutting edge smartphones as well.

The LG cell phones offered through Tracfone are not always newest or most recently released. They tend to be older models that have proven themselves with good value, durability and low cost. In this list you will see a range of phones, from flip phones to smartphones, and each one has its uses. We are rating these phones based on functionality, features and which one we would want to own.

LG products are great, and the same is true for their mobile devices from Tracfone, so let's get straight to the top 5 LG phones from Tracfone.

The Top 5 Best LG Brand Cell Phones Available at Tracfone

Starting with #8:

#8 - LG 440G
best LG cell phone tracfone
LG 440G
The LG 440G is a flip phone loaded with more features than one would expect for this compact phone.

It comes with fast mobile web, courtesy of 3G connectivity speeds. It also has a decent 1.3 MP camera, hands free speaker, voice dialing and all the other features normally included with a Tracfone. The only downside to this impressive little phone is that it only comes with Double Minutes for Life instead of the better Triple Minutes for Life that most newer Tracfone's now have.

Overall, this LG phone is small, convenient and has great value as a backup phone, or for other uses. You can read TracfoneReivewer's full LG 440G Review to learn more, including how to find it for less than retail price.

#7 - LG 530G
top 3 lg tracfone cell phones
LG 530G
This LG phone is modest upgrade from older phones, including the LG 500G, which it is similar to. The LG 530G is a candy bar style phone (meaning no flipping or sliding parts), with a full QWERTY keyboard.

This phone is great for texting, in fact, it is one of TracfoneReviewer's top picks in our Best Tracfone Cell Phones for Texting post. The QWERTY keyboard makes texting quick and convenient, even for those unfamiliar with this style keyboard. If you haven't tried texting with a phone like this, it is well worth a try.

Other impressive features the LG 530 comes with include MP3 player, 1.3 MP camera, and best of all, Triple Minutes for Life. (which triples every minute added to the phone - a great value)

Overall, the LG 530G is a good LG brand cell phone offered by Tracfone and works well as an everyday phone. Triple Minutes for Life and easy texting makes it one of the best cell phones offered by Tracfone.

You can read our Review of the LG 530G to see the full feature list, and find our likes and dislikes for the phone.

#6 - LG 840G
lg 840G best tracfone cell phone
White LG 840G
Our #6 pick for best LG Tracfone is the 840G. It has semi-modern features, and provides great value and functionality to consumers. It comes with Triple Minutes for Life, which means that every minute you add is tripled!

Three features that really stand out on the LG 840G are Touchscreen, MP3 player with 2GB MicroSD card included, and WiFi connectivity.

The LG 840G is one of only a handful of Tracfone Cell Phones with WiFi.(besides smartphones) WiFi connectivity allows you to connect to the internet for free and surf the web without using prepaid minutes. Needless to say, WiFi is a huge feature.

The touchscreen on the LG 840G is better than the touchscreen on the older, LG 800G. It may take some getting used to, but functions well and helps make this phone look like it is part of the modern smartphones, even if it isn't quite there yet.

Overall, the LG 840G is more stylish than older phones, but lacks when compared to the smartphones available. You can read our entire Review of the LG 840G to see all the features, and where to find it for less than the $50 retail price.

#5 - LG Optimus Dynamic
best LG phones from tracfone
LG Optimus Dynamic
One of the first phones with Android to be available for Tracfone, the LG Optimus Dynamic was the start of a wave of smartphones that washed in over the last few years. This phone is a true smartphone, running Android 2.3 and comes with a lot of features besides the ability to access thousands of apps in the Google Play store.

The touchscreen is 3.2", about the same as the LG 840G. The Dynamic also has WiFi, and Triple Minutes for Life.

It has a convenient size for those who don't want a large phone, and you can easily surf the web, browse YouTube, or play games on the phone. The storage space on the Optimus Dynamic isn't great, however, so you won't be able to load a large number of apps. But there are ways to move apps to the included SD card which helps increase the space.

Check out our full review of the LG Optimus Dynamic to learn more about the features. You can also take a look at the price on Amazon, which last check put it at under $20!

While this is a smartphone, it also is a very basic one, and has almost no memory for storing apps or other files, and generally may not be the best choice for most people looking for a smartphone to use with Tracfone.

#4 - LG Optimus Dynamic II
top 5 lg tracfone devices
LG Optimus Dynamic II
As you can probably guess, the LG Optimus Dynamic II is a newer and better upgrade to the LG Optimus Dynamic. The Dynamic II has a larger 3.8" screen, WiFi, and more internal memory for storing things.

The LG Optimus Dynamic II runs Android 4.1 which is a newer version of Android OS. It also has a 3MP camera and lots of other great features.

The Dynamic II was a vast improvement over other smartphones available from Tracfone at the time. However, we continue to see better phones becoming available. Take a look at our List of Android Smartphones to see some of the other options available including the LG Optimus Fuel which we would rate similarly to the Optimus Dynamic II.

For more features and info, read our Review of the LG Optimus Dynamic II. It is currently selling for under $50 on Amazon and other places.

#3 - LG Lucky and LG Sunrise
The LG Lucky (L16C) and LG Sunrise (L15G) are basically the same device, but one for use with GSM networks, and the other for CDMA (note the 'G' and 'C' at the end of each phone's name).

These phones are recently released and come with Android 4.4, a 3.8" touchscreen for those who want a smaller sized device, and also an improved amount of processing power and RAM compared to older smartphones.

Read our Review of the LG Lucky for more details on this phone, and where you can find it.

While the Sunrise and Lucky are adequate devices, we would rather go with one of the next two choices:

#2 - LG Ultimate 2
best tracfone lg phone
LG Ultimate 2
The LG Ultimate 2 was like a breath of fresh air when it was released on Tracfone and saw a large number of users upgrading to it from older devices for good reason.

The Ultimate 2 comes with a 4.5" touchscreen, Android 4.4, a dual core processor and 1 GB of RAM. One of the most important features this phone also includes is about 4GB of useable internal memory for applications and other storage. Up until this point, Tracfone's smartphone offerings had very little internal memory, limiting their usefulness.

While the Ultimate 2 isn't quite as good as other mid level smartphones like the Moto G or LG G2, it is priced at a more reasonable level. In fact, you can find the LG Ultimate 2 on Amazon for just $70 last time we checked, and about the same on eBay.

Don't forget to see our full Review of the LG Ultimate 2 for further details on this phone, and lots of comments from users.

We ranked the Ultimate 2 in second on this list because it delivers fairly well in many categories, but our top choice has just a few additional features as you will see.

#1 - LG Power and LG Sunset
top lg phones
LG Power
These are some of the latest phones to come to Tracfone and our current pick for the best LG phone! The Power (L22C) and Sunset (L33L) are very similar except for one important detail which we will cover further down.

Both phones feature a 4.5" touchscreen, Android 5.0, 1 GB RAM with a quad core processor for better performance compared to older smartphones. They also have a 5MP camera, and about 4 GB usable internal memory.

Now, the difference between these devices is that the LG Power uses 3G CDMA cell service, while the LG Sunset is capable of 4G LTE on GSM networks. Obviously, if you have access to GSM networks in your area you will want the Sunset over the Power, but not all areas have coverage.

Take a look at our reviews for the LG Power and LG Sunset to learn more about each device, and see where you can find them for the best prices.

If you're just looking for help in choosing a new smartphone, we would recommend either the LG Ultimate 2, or the LG Power/Sunset. You should go on the Tracfone website and check if you have service in your area first (you can type in your zip code when searching for cell phones, and if CDMA smartphones show up, you will have service for CDMA, and the same for GSM) then look around online, both eBay and Amazon and other retailers, and find the best deal. Prices change often, and you can also find the phones bundled with Airtime cards for an even better deal.

The Best LG Brand Cell Phones
Here are the top 8 phones made by LG for Tracfone prepaid cell phone service. Tracfone is a prepaid wireless service provider that offers inexpensive cell phone plans, and also devices to use on those plans.

News about Tracfone GSM Activation Kit
Tracfone Wireless appears to finally be allowing GSM users to bring their smartphones to use with the BYOP program. We've seen various signs of this over the past few months, and now it is becoming a reality.

Order a CDMA/GSM activation kit on the Tracfone website, have an AT&T compatible GSM device, follow the online instructions, and you should be up and running. It sounds simple, and maybe it is, but stick around as we look into bringing GSM devices to Tracfone.

For those who might not know, Tracfone is a low cost prepaid service provider. They also sell phones to use with their low cost service, as well as allow consumers to bring certain smartphones to Tracfone.

Until recently, you could only bring Verizon compatible CDMA phones to use with Tracfone. This was great, but for those who live in areas without Verizon coverage, you were out of luck.

But now Tracfone is offering the same option of bringing your own smartphone to use on Tracfone's GSM network (through AT&T). It also appears that Tracfone has released at least one GSM smartphone, the LG Sunrise.

Well let's jump straight into what you're probably looking for, how to get your unlocked GSM phone activated with Tracfone.

How to Get a GSM or CDMA Activation Kit

Tracfone BYOP GSM phone
If the first kit is sold out, try the kit with 60 Minutes (below)
To add your unlocked AT&T (GSM) or Verizon (CDMA) 4G LTE device to Tracfone you will need a NAC (Network Access Code) and SIM card. You can get both of these in a Tracfone Activation Kit.

You get everything you need to activate either a CDMA or GSM smartphone in one kit from Tracfone. At this point, you can find the Kit in stores, or online at the Tracfone website.

We ordered our kit by visiting this link, clicking select SIM, and then choosing the Activation Kit plus 60 Minute Card, because the Kit only option was sold out. (We have since found the activation kit available on Amazon and the Walmart website)

We received the kit in about a week, coming with both the kit and minutes.

activate gsm smartphone with tracfone
Tracfone GSM/CDMA Activation Kit (plus 60 Minutes)
Once you have the kit, and a phone, you can get started by visiting the Tracfone byop site and following the prompts for adding your phone. In some cases, consumers have had a quick and simple process of activating a new phone, while others have faced some challenges.

We will share additional updates on this once the kit arrives.

Should you Choose GSM or CDMA?

For quite a while now, Tracfone only accepted smartphones that used Verizon CDMA service. This limited smartphones to only those in areas with good Verizon coverage.

Now that is changing as people in GSM areas with AT&T coverage can also use smartphone with Tracfone service. But which one is right for you?

We created a resource that goes into the Difference between GSM and CDMA that you can take a look at if you are not sure about your situation.

For more information about bringing your own phone to use with Tracfone, visit our Tracfone BYOP page.

Will Tracfone Release more GSM Smartphones?

This is a common question we see, although usually it is, 'Will Tracfone release a GSM Phone soon?', but now that the LG Sunrise has appeared, we expect Tracfone to continue to, although perhaps slowly, release newer and better GSM smartphones. We saw this with the CDMA smartphones, and Tracfone has continued to offer newer devices with better specs.

So if you don't want to try bringing your own device to Tracfone, it shouldn't be too long before more GSM smartphone options are also available.
