How Does the LG 840G Compare to the LG 800G?

This is a question that comes up a lot between different Tracfone devices, and today we will be comparing the LG 840G to the LG 800G to see how they are different, what is similar, and which makes better sense to buy.

These are two prepaid phones offered through Tracfone wireless. The phones and prepaid minute cards can be found both online and in many retail stores. This comparison is aimed to provide consumers with information to make a more informed purchase.

So let's get straight to the similarities.

Similarities between the LG 840G and LG 800G:

These phones are actually quite similar in a number of ways, with the LG 840G sort of like a big brother to the LG 800G.
  • Both phones are touchscreen devices
  • The LG 840G and LG 800G are similar size, with the LG 800G slightly smaller
  • Both phones come with Triple Minutes for Life
  • Both phones come with all the basic Tracfone cell phone features:
    • Mobile web, MP3 Player, Camera
    • Phone Book, Alarm clock, Voicemail etc.

While the two phones are fairly similar in many of the features and specs, there are plenty of differences that seperate these phones, so let's look at them.

Differences between the LG 840G and LG 800G

what is the difference between the lg 840g and lg 800g
As mentioned earlier, the LG 800G is like the little brother to the LG 840G. Thus, the LG 840G comes with several great features that the LG 800G just doesn't have.

Features that the LG 840G comes with, but the LG 800G does not:

  • 3G - Faster web browsing speeds
  • WiFi Connectivity - Connect to and browse the internet for free with the LG 840G
  • Includes 2 GB MicroSD card
  • Google Maps can be installed on the LG 840G (read How to Install Google Maps)
  • The LG 840G comes in white or black
So, one can see just from this list that the LG 840G is an improvement on the LG 800G in the areas of speed, internet access, and memory, but what about price? For many, price is the most important comparison when choosing between two products.

The LG 800G wins in the price comparison over the LG 840G.

The LG 840G has a retail price of $59.99, but can usually be found various places online, like Amazon, for closer to $40. A very good deal.

But the LG 800G, which typically retails for about $49.99, can be found online for much cheaper, (currently $15 on Amazon!). You can even get a reconditioned LG 800G from the Tracfone website for just $5! (But that deal might not last very long)

Thus, if you are on a tight budget, and just want a phone with Triple Minutes for Life, the LG 800G might be the best choice.

Finally, many customers found the touchscreen for the LG 840G to be a significant improvement over the LG 800G's touchscreen which can be somewhat unresponsive, especially compared with modern touchscreen phones.

LG 840G Vs LG 800G - And the Winner Is:

TracfoneReviewer gives the LG 840G the win in this comparison for three reasons:

lg 840g comparison
White LG 840G
While the LG 800G wins on price, the LG 840G wins in many other categories that outweigh price for most buyers. (if price is very important to you, then it might outweigh the features on the LG 840G)

The WiFi connectivity on the LG 840G allows users to browse the internet for free, a huge bonus and money saving feature, and something the LG 800G just doesn't have.

Lastly, the touchscreen for the LG 840G is a good improvement over the LG 800G, adding the last reason why we would choose the LG 840G.

We will be doing more of these comparisons, so leave a comment with two phones you would like to see us compare! Also share this with others who might enjoy it.

What is the Best Value Tracfone Cell Phone?

It is a question many have asked, and many have pondered, so here at TracfoneReviewer, we will answer that question for you!

Tracfone offers low cost, budget cell phones and prepaid minutes so their phones tend to not have the most modern features and capabilities. But there are several phones from Tracfone that stand out, and are vying to get into our list.

We will be compiling this list based on several factors, including the cell phone's general popularity, useful features, and TracfoneReviewer's own special metrics.

This list contains the top 3 best value cell phones from Tracfone. You might also be interested in one of our previous posts, the Best Tracfone Cell Phones for Texting.

Please Note: This post covers the best value cell phones from Tracfone based on price and features. Tracfone recently released four new Android powered Smartphones that are pretty impressive with lots of great features. Visit our Cell Phone Reviews page to learn more about each of these phones.

Now, let's get into this list.

Top 3 Best Value Tracfone Cell Phones

This was a challenging list to compile, with several great options to choose from, and many features to compare. But in the end, we settled on the phones listed below, so let's begin with number three in the list:

#3 Best Value Tracfone Cell Phone - LG 530G

LG 530G

This phone comes in at #3 in our list for its great durability, long battery life, and other good features. A phone with full QWERTY keyboard, it makes for fast and easy texting. Add to that Triple Minutes for Life, MP3 player, 1.3mp camera and video recorder, and all the other common phone features, and you have a solid phone that will last.

The LG 530G typically retails for $50, but can be found on sale at various locations. We recently found this phone for less than $40 on Amazon.

#2 Best Value Tracfone Cell Phone - Samsung S390G

what is the best Tracfone Cell phone
Samsung S390G
The S390G reaches #2 in our top three list for some of the same reasons the LG 530G had, including a full QWERTY keyboard, good battery life and Triple Minutes for Life, but it is higher because of one great feature; WiFi capability. The Samsung S390G is capable of connecting to WiFi internet allowing the user to surf the web for free from the phone.

While this phone does come with lots of fantastic features, it is also important to note that a fair number of users have reported various quirks with this phone, including ghost calls to 911. So if you get a defective phone, be sure to return it for one in good working order.

The Samsung S390G goes for about $50 but again, it can usually be found for less. In fact, last we checked it was less than $25 on Amazon!

What gives the LG 840G the top spot in our list of the best Tracfone cell phones? Besides features like Triple Minutes for Life, WiFi capability and a 2MP Camera, this phone also comes with a 2GB MicroSD card, touchscreen, and 3G connectivity.

While touchscreens may not be for everyone, this phone is as close to a smartphone as you can get. The phone is relatively small and fits in your hand comfortably. It can connect to WiFi internet, or surf from the mobile browser at 3G speeds.

It is, by far, the most feature rich phone Tracfone offers, (besides the new Android powered smartphones) and the most popular, which is why it tops our list and is TracfoneReviewer's pick for the Best Value Tracfone Cell Phone.

You can find the LG 840G in most stores and online for around $60. But we found the phone for less than $40 on Amazon!

Honorable Mention - Samsung S425G

It is worth mentioning the Samsung S425G because it is also a great phone from Tracfone with lots of good features including 3G connectivity and a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The only reason this phone didn't crack our list is its lack of popularity and the fact that not everyone is interested in a slider style phone. You can learn more about this phone by reading our Full Review of the Samsung S425G.

We hope you found this list useful. Leave a comment with your questions, thoughts or top 3 picks!

How to Get Google Maps on your LG 840G

For some, loading Google Maps onto the LG 840G is a simple thing, for others, for some reason it is a challenge and I have noticed a few questions, so I wanted to share some information and resources for getting Google Maps installed on a LG 840G.

I could copy and paste the information I found from elsewhere, but It is better to get it from the source, so you can read all the information about it. So I will link you to the forum with all the information you should need to load the Google Maps app on your LG 840G.

--Update--
A visitor commented below with another, possibly easier method for getting Google Maps:

Go to boostapps.com/jump and enter 6944 to get the Google signed version of Google Maps 2.3.2. It'll load from the .jad. (from Anonymous)

If that works for you, then great, otherwise, here is another method below. Comment with any results or questions and we will try to help!

Let's get right to it.

1. Visit the forum post at Howard Forums detailing how to get the Google Maps app on an LG 840G

2. Then follow the information provided, including reading the posts on the second forum, Turk Forums.

3. As the post at Howard Forums recommends, read the information provided at Turk Forums, especially starting at post #887, which is 3/4 down the page. (posts are numbered at the top right corner of each post).

A Newer Phone From TracFone with 3G and WiFi

This review from TracfoneReviewer covers the LG 840G.

The LG 840G is a touchscreen phone from Tracfone that offers a smartphone feel and look but with a no-contract prepaid cell phone.

It is basically a much improved LG 800G with only a slightly higher price tag.

Many people agree that the LG840G is Tracfone's best offering yet (excluding the recent smartphones), with a handful of great features that give this phone a similar feel to other smartphones on the market. But be aware this phone does not compare with top of the line phones from other major contract companies.

Tracfone has recently released four actual Android powered Smartphones. Follow the links to read our review of each one:
LG Optimus Dynamic
Samsung Galaxy Centura
Huawei Glory
ZTE Valet

LG 840G Features and Specs

This phone has most of the standard Tracfone features, but also includes several useful features worth spending a little extra for.

  • 2.0 MP Camera/Video

  • Wall Charger
  • 3-4 day normal use battery life
  • 3G and WiFi Connectivity
  • 2GB MicroSD Card
  • About the size of an iPod Touch or iPhone

Likes and Dislikes for the LG 840G from Tracfone

Let's begin with the Likes:
There are quite a few features for the LG 840G that make it a very worthwhile upgrade from other phones.

Triple Minutes for Life means that if you add a 60 minute card, you would get 180 total minutes! (and don't forget to use a promo code!)

The battery life is advertised to last 4hrs of constant talk time, or 13 days on standby. Users have determined that with normal use, the battery lasts an impressive 3-4 days.

Another big plus for this phone is the included 2GB MicroSD card. On previous phones such as the LG 500G or 530G, one would have to buy a MicroSD card separably in order to use the Media player or store more than a small amount of data on the phone. But the LG 840G delivers with it's included MicroSD card.

Finally, one of the best features for the 840G is the 3G/WiFi. When connected to WiFi networks, such as in your home, at work, or other locations with free WiFi, browsing does not deduct from your prepaid minutes. This makes it possible to actually use the Mobile Web without draining your prepaid minutes in a hurry.

Additionally, the previous standard minute rate for web browsing of .5 units per minute has been changed to a ratio of actual data used, instead of time spent online. This also makes web browsing more economical than in the past.

Dislikes for the LG 840G
This phone does a good job of correcting a lot of the Dislikes we had about previous Tracfones. The included SD card, WiFi connectivity and Triple Minutes for Life leaves only a small handful of possible dislikes, which we will quickly mention here.

The phone runs a java based proprietary operating system which allows the installation of .jar apps, and is not a smartphone. This means that android apps etc. won't work on this phone. But, with a little effort, apps such as Google Maps can be installed on the phone.

Another interesting dislike is the QWERTY keypad that appears when texting or entering a web address. The problem occurs when one navigates to a website that has open text areas for entering information (such as registering for a website). No keypad appears and so it is impossible to enter any information. Using a different browser such as Opera Mini, is one way to get around this problem. Hopefully this issue will be addressed in the near future.

Finally, it is important to mention again that this phone is a good phone, with some great features and a good price, but it doesn't run on a standard OS, like Android for example.

If you are interested in a great phone with a QWERTY keypad, consider the LG 530G.

Overall Opinion and Review of the LG 840G

The LG 840G is stylish, modern and faster than previous Tracfone mobile phones with the feel of an iPod touch or iPhone. It provides plenty of useful features such as the microSD card, WiFi, and Triple Minutes for Life.

This phone is a great upgrade from other Tracfones, but those who are thinking of switching from a contract smartphone to the LG 840G may be a little disappointed with some of the limitations.

You should really check out Tracfone's Android Smartphones if you are looking for features and the ability to use apps.

The cellphone retails for $59.99 most places, with occasional sales at various locations. However, it can sometimes be found for much less from Amazon (last check it was $40 w/ free shipping!)

With any touchscreen phone, covers and cases are very valuable in protecting the phone from scratches or other damage. Here is a link to LG 840G Covers on Amazon with lots of options to suit anyone's needs and preferences.
